Sound – the term sound refers to a type of acoustic wave that is heard by the human ear. The frequency of a sound wave ranges from 16 Hz to 20 kHz (20,000 Hz). The human ear is constructed in such a way that it can only hear this range, and as the body ages, this range may decrease.

For the phenomenon of sound to occur, the acoustic wave must propagate through an elastic medium. This can be liquids, gases, or solids. Most often, sound travels through air, with the caveat that this is not possible in a vacuum. An acoustic wave can only move if its wavelength exceeds the distance between particles.

The basic sound is a tone, or a simple sound. It is created by an acoustic wave that is perfectly sinusoidal and has a specific wavelength and frequency. Even very complex sounds can be broken down into simple sounds.

In the psychological definition of sound, we refer to it as the auditory sensations that are triggered by disturbances in waves. Sounds can be classified based on their pitch, timbre, and loudness.
