Hearing range – the hearing range defines the range of frequencies of acoustic (sound) waves that can be perceived and understood by the human ear. The most commonly cited and accepted hearing range for humans is from 16 Hz to 20 kHz. Above this threshold are ultrasound frequencies, and below are infrasound frequencies.

The limits of hearing are determined not only by the upper and lower thresholds of audible sound frequencies but also by the upper and lower thresholds of acceptable sound pressure levels. The limits of hearing are a conventional concept and can vary in range depending on a person’s age, gender, or individual predispositions.

Within the hearing range, it is worth noting the frequencies around 4 kHz, which are best heard by the human ear.

In the case of animals, the hearing range can be significantly greater than ours. Exceeding the upper threshold of the hearing limit can cause ear pain.
