Comb filter – the comb filter is classified as a common acoustic defect. It primarily occurs in small rooms. This phenomenon is related to the barrier for sound created by the size and geometry of the room. This leads to interference of sound waves. As a result, waves reflect off flat walls and then return, causing subsequent waves and sounds to overlap. This results in local amplifications and attenuations of individual waves, which can have negative effects on the spectrum of broadband music.
The effect of this phenomenon is also the difficulty in distinguishing individual sounds by listeners. This is caused by the limitations and capabilities of the human ear in processing sounds.
To prevent the occurrence of a comb filter in small rooms, it is advisable to use sound-absorbing or sound-dampening accessories. They should be installed in places where the first reflection of the sound wave occurs, thereby significantly weakening the returning wave.
